Balkan countries have a long history of viticulture and wine production. Their grape-friendly soil and climatic conditions are favorable for production of many different types of wines, from dry, sparkling whites to rich, aromatic, purplish reds.

With at least 1.8 million tons of wine produced every year, the Balkan region ranks 5th in the world, right after the largest wine producing countries Italy, France, Spain and USA. Local wine production is increasing and improving steadily, with newly developing export markets now being added to well-established domestic ones.
