The port is a key transport link between Montenegro and the rest of the Balkan Peninsula. It handles over 95% of the country’s maritime freight and its development is paramount to improving cross-border infrastructure. With the construction of the new container terminal, Montenegro would get the chance to become one of the first ports of Europe for ships coming from Asia and achieve a greater regional economic integration.
The anticipations in the Strategy are that this enlargement would increase further transport of goods via ships, railway or road traffic towards Central and East Europe, North Africa and Western Asia.
