In Bulgaria the interest in industrial robots and automation has been steadily growing over the last few years. Among the main drivers are the ever-greater need for more productive and competitive manufacturing processes, the shortage of qualified labor force and the strive for higher flexibility and sustainability of industrial enterprises. In addition to this, the availability of European funding in the fields of digitalization and green transformation also triggers investments in new automated solutions. The role of industrial robot integrators and suppliers in the country is becoming increasingly crucial in this regard, as they support companies in the transition to smart manufacturing.
However, Bulgaria is only at an early phase of implementation of industrial robots compared to Western-European and Asian countries. At the same time the demand is constantly growing due to a shortage of skilled staff and the need to modernize production processes, which results in more targeted investments in robotization. The sector of the Bulgarian robot suppliers and integrators has proven to increase steadily over the last years – a trend, supported by official statistics and professional association studies. Although the robotization rate of the country is below the European average, the trend is in a positive direction, with increasing investments and exports.
Overview
The majority of companies in the sector are concentrated in Sofia, which is establishing itself as the main hub for robotics and automation in the country. Invest Sofia reports that over 75% of Bulgarian companies in the branch and all multinational enterprises operating in the field of robotics and automation are headquartered in the capital. Sofia is also home to key research and development centers, including the Institute of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT), the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia Tech Park.
Among the key local client sectors are the chemical industry, metals, e-commerce (distribution centers and warehouses), and machinery and electronics manufacturing. Industrial robots in Bulgaria are mainly used to automate repetitive manufacturing processes, such as welding, assembly, and palletizing.
The lack of detailed sectoral data in international databases is an indicator of the need for more structured data collection and monitoring of this market at the national level. Companies in Bulgaria offering complete robotic solutions provide a wide range of services: robots integration, robotic cells design and implementation, development of customized solutions including industrial robots, peripherals and control systems, production line automation, including the implementation of robots for tasks such as welding, assembly, packaging and palletizing. Companies in the sector also provide personnel training and technical support to maintain the efficiency of the integrated systems.
Facts and opportunities
According to recent statistics, reported by the Invest Bulgaria Agency (IBA), Bulgaria ranks among the top 15 countries with a trade surplus in industrial robots. Approximately 45 workers are supported by one robot in the manufacturing of automotive components. In the mechanical engineering sector one robot is helping about 70 workers. The robotics and mechatronics industry is export-oriented and plays a key role for the Bulgarian economy, IBA also reports.
“Bulgarian universities offer specialized programs in mechatronics and robotics, with training including artificial intelligence and automation. The country benefits from the availability of scientific infrastructure with a focus on innovation”, the investment agency further informs.
The main obstacles to the wider implementation of robotics in Bulgaria include high initial investments and a shortage of qualified personnel, trained and capable to work with newly integrated robotic systems and solutions.
Many leading international manufacturers of industrial robots are present in Bulgaria through their official partners, distributors or system integrators. Among the most prominent are ABB, Auctech, Delta, Doosan Robotics, Easy Robotics, Fanuc, Festo, Han’s Robots, Kawasaki Robotics, KUKA, Mobile Industrial Robots, Omron, Panasonic, Schneider Electric, Universal Robots, Yamaha, Yaskawa, etc. Their presence in the country creates a solid foundation for robotics development and provides the opportunity for Bulgarian enterprises to implement proven technologies with local technical support and expertise.
An important pillar of technical education in Bulgaria, which provides the sector with personnel, are technical universities. Cooperation between Bulgarian institutes and international companies, such as the project between INSAIT and Toyota to develop robots with artificial intelligence, contributes to the development of the sector. “BRAIN++” will be the name of the Bulgarian AI factory, which is to be positioned in Sofia Tech Park as part of a joint project with INSAIT worth EUR 90 million. Its construction is planned to start in 2026, and the deadline for finalization is 3 years. Among the functions of the Bulgarian AI factory will be supporting SMEs and startups and promoting progress in key sectors, such as robotics and industry.
Robotization trends
According to data of The International Federation of Robotics (IFR), Bulgaria is among the countries in Europe with a lower level of industrial robotization. In 2022, Bulgaria has about 18 industrial robots per 10 000 employed persons, while the European average is 106 robots. However, these numbers are slowly increasing as businesses across the country begin to recognize the benefits of automation.
The stock of operational robots in Europe has grown by an average of 7% per year since 2018. There was a total of 777 596 units in operation on the factory floors in 2024, IFR further reports. The EU has a robot density of 219 units per 10 000 workers. Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and Slovenia are all in the world’s top 10.
The main branch organization in the robotics sector in Bulgaria is the Professional Association of Robotics, Automation and Innovations (PARAi). It conducts an annual survey that examines the level of automation of Bulgarian industry, as well as other sectoral studies.
Over 50 industrial robots were installed in Bulgaria in 2022, half of them second-hand. The main reason for automation is the shortage of personnel, indicated by 74% of the companies surveyed.
According to officially published reports, in 2022, Bulgaria is among the 15 countries with a trade surplus in the field of industrial robots, with a growth of 280% compared to 2021. Exports include industrial robots, manipulators and CNC machines. World’s top exports data for 2022 show that Bulgaria ranks 15th globally in terms of trade surplus in industrial robots. The study shows an increase of over 280% compared to the previous year.
In 2023, members of PARAi integrated 85 industrial robots, and the association predicted a 9,8% increase in 2024.
Recent statistics
Data shows that the country’s GDP grew by 2,8% in 2024, with companies working in the field of robotics and automation making a significant contribution to this growth, the “Bulgarian Success-Stories in Robotics and Automation” (2024) report by PARAi says.
The association recently published an overview of the results of the online survey “Problems and Opportunities of the Bulgarian Industry for 2024 and 2025”, in which four types of respondents took part – robot manufacturers, integrators, factories and software companies, the majority of which are members of the industry organization.
The majority of the companies participating in the study (53%) are mainly engaged in system integration. 47 percent are representatives of companies that manufacture robots. 20% are manufacturing enterprises, and the remaining 13% are from the software business. According to the information summarized by PARAi, the number of robots sold by its members in 2024 is 191 units, of which 70,7% are installed. Collaborative robots account for about 18,4% of installations, the branch organization further elaborates.

When asked what their main reason for investing in robots was in 2024, 80% of the survey participants cited labor shortages. 53% of companies said their investments were to increase production capacity. Other reasons for purchasing robots include: improving quality (33%), cost optimization (33%), process integration (27%), reducing scrap (13%), increased safety (7%), or other (7%), the summary shows.
Challenges
Despite the growing interest in industrial automation in Bulgaria, integrators and industrial robot manufacturers face numerous challenges hindering the wider dissemination of robotic solutions in industry. One of the main problems remains the cost barrier. Industrial robot and integration investment is rather significant, especially for small and medium enterprises. Although long-term return on investment in automation is high through saving labor costs, enhancing quality and productivity, many companies are unable to obtain capital resources for the investment. Lack of flexible financial instruments for the purpose of financing installation of robot systems also limits the penetration of technology.
An additional obstacle is the absence of skilled personnel. Industrial robot maintenance and integration require certain specific technical knowledge – in mechatronics, software programming, vision systems and automation. However, many engineering and technical professionals prefer to seek carrier opportunities abroad, which makes implementation as well as long-term maintenance of robotic systems challenging.
There is also a deficiency of awareness and technological maturity among some Bulgarian companies. Many manufacturing enterprises, especially those in traditional industries, are less aware of what can be achieved with modern-day robotics or underestimate the potential of automation to transform their business. There is rarely any digitalization strategy, and decisions are made reactively, rather than proactively. This leads to a low technological preparedness and reluctance to innovate employing new solutions, even where economic reasons for it exist.
Overcoming present limitations calls for collaborative effort by business, the educational sector and the government. Increasing access to financing, pushing research in STEM fields, together with aggressive focus and display of best practices may well hasten industrial robotics’ application in Bulgarian companies significantly.
Future prospects
Industrial robotics in Bulgaria is entering a new phase, where more developing technologies and focus on digital transformation become key drivers. Main trends include the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and vision systems that make the robots smarter and more flexible in real time. Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) also gain more attention, especially in logistics and factory transport. There is a growing focus on collaborative robots (cobots) as well as on modern automated systems where human-machine collaboration can be achieved without physical barriers. They are suitable even for small and medium businesses to pursue easy integration as well as quick returns.
In addition to this, European and country-level digitalization policy programs also provide funding and expert assistance that allow for the deployment of robot systems. This provides a firm foundation not just for the overall automation of industry, but also for building up the competence of local integrators and suppliers, which play a key role in this progress, outlining a positive perspective for the development of industrial robotics in Bulgaria.
