EBRD backs ENGIE Romania with EUR 90 million loan for renewable energy projects

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is boosting Romania’s renewable energy capacity by providing a EUR 90 million loan to ENGIE Romania, one of the country’s top energy suppliers and distributors. The funding will support the development of new renewable energy projects by ENGIE with a combined capacity of at least 250 megawatts by 2028. This marks the first collaboration between the EBRD and ENGIE Romania, part of the global ENGIE Group, which operates in 31 countries. ENGIE Group has already invested more than EUR 2 billion in Romania since acquiring Distrigaz Sud in 2005, focusing largely on gas distribution infrastructure and renewable energy initiatives.

“We are pleased to be partnering with ENGIE Romania for the first time to support its renewables ambitions and meeting the decarbonisation targets. This investment reflects our continued commitment to the green transition in the region and lays the foundation for a strong long-term relationship built on shared decarbonisation goals”, said Grzegorz Zielinski, Director, Energy Europe at the EBRD.

Nicolas Richard, CEO of ENGIE Romania, welcomed the support, saying: “The EBRD’s support reinforces our ambition to expand our renewable energy portfolio, a core element of our decarbonisation strategy, and to provide customers with green energy. We are proud to join forces with the EBRD in shaping a greener and more resilient energy for the Romanian customers”.

The loan underlines the EBRD’s broader commitment to accelerating the green transition across its regions of operation.
